Good News, Bad News

Monday was a night of good news, bad news.  The good news is that Annee and the Blue Devils won their tournament championship game against the Irish.  The Irish jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Blue Devils came back to win 23-15.  The Blue Devils outscored their opponents 15-3 in the second half of both the semifinal and championship games.  Hayden and the Heat weren't as lucky in their rubber game against the Celtics.  After being down early, the game was tied with a minutes left.  The Celtics were able to close it out in final minute of the game.  Ending the season with a loss is something of a different feeling for Hayden.  He was coming off two Toy Bowl wins and basketball and baseball championships.

Coach Brad and I have been coaching together that long too.  The six year plan worked perfectly!

Heat Advance to Semifinals

Hayden and the Heat advanced to the semifinals of the their tournament with a 49-34 win over the Grizzlies on Friday night.  Hayden had a very good game scoring 15 points, 13 in the first half.  They play the Celtics on Monday night.  The game will be the rubber match between the two teams after they split in the last two games of the regular season.  Unfortunately, Hayden's game versus the Celtics will be at the same time that Annee and the Blue Devils are playing in the championship game of the girls league.

Weekend Update

We have wrapped up the weekend of basketball and other activities.  Hayden's travel basketball team (Triple Threat) finished 2nd in their first tournament of the year.  They won the semi-final game by 8 before falling in the championship game by the same margin.  Hayden did pretty well.  He scored 12 points in the tournament and was one of three of our players to score in all four games.  The Heat, his county team, ended up with the one seed and will open up their tournament on Friday.  They are on a collision course for a rematch with the Celtics, who they split with last week, in the semi-finals.  Annee swam up in Louisville on Sunday.  She set a personal best time in the 100 Fly and missed qualifying for state by less than one second.  On Monday, the Blue Devils played their first tournament game defeating the Spartans 24-8.  Annee scored 7 points helping the Blue Devils jump out to a 23-1 lead early in the third quarter.  The semi-final game will be against the Crimson Tide.  Below are some pictures from the past few days.

We were a bit more low key for this years book character parade.  Annee went as Jane Goodall and Hayden was Albert Einstein.

Hayden's basketball tournament was in Cave City which is the home of Wigwam Village No. 2.  It is one of three (out of seven original) Wigmam motels still in operation.

Heat Fire Back & A Weekend of Basketball with Swimming on the Side

Hayden and the Heat started a full weekend of basketball on Friday with a big win in a rematch of Tuesday game versus the Celtics.  The Heat rallied from a 9-0 first quarter deficit to avenge their only loss on the season.  Hayden played very well and scored 8 points in the 45-34 victory.  The Heat have finished the regular season 9-1 and in a three way tie for first.  Annee and the Blue Devils kept the ball rolling with a 28-15 victory over the Tigers Saturday morning.  Annee had six points in the win and helped the Blue Devils secure the top seed for the tournament.  The Blue Devils finished the season 8-2 and open up the tournament with the Spartans on Monday.  After Annee's game, we made a couple of trips up to Cave City for Hayden's first two games with his AAU team Triple Threat.  Triple Threat won their first game of pool play against the Barren County Vipers 24-23 on a last second shot before falling to Grayson County 28-29 in the second context.  Triple Threat will be the three seed in the single elimination part of the tournament Sunday.  Hayden had a couple of pretty good games scoring 2 in the first and 5 points in the second.  Annee will be swimming up in Louisville tomorrow.  Heather, Grandma Peggy, and Grandpa Cy will make their way to Louisville for the swim meet.  Below are a couple of photos that Grandpa Cy took of the hoops action over the past couple days.

Blue Devils Hold On to Win, Heat Remain on Fire

The Blue Devils posted their sixth consecutive victory with a 14-10 victory over the Tar Heels and are now 7-2 on the season.  They wrap up their season against the Tigers on Saturday.  Right now they are a two seed in the upcoming tournament.  The Heat rolled to a 42-16 victory over the Wizards to run their record to 8-0.  They have two tough games this week against the Celtics (on Tuesday and Friday).

All-State, Proficient & Distinguished

Annee and I made a quick trip to Louisville Wednesday and Thursday so she could participate in All-State Chorus.  The kids practiced Wednesday night and most of the day Thursday before performing Thursday night.  Approximately 1/3 of students who try out, get accepted to participate.  I am pretty sure that any singing talent is not from me.  While Annee was at All-State, Hayden was participating in Briarwood's final academic team match before districts.  Briarwood won both matches against Alvaton.  On Friday morning, Annee and Hayden were both recognized for earning Proficient and Distinguished designations on the K-Prep exams administered last Spring.  Both earned distinguished standing on three of the four tests and proficient in the other.

Briarwood was well represented at All-State Chorus

Masterpiece Completed & Hoops Update

Hayden was not very happy when school was canceled on Friday, January 18th.  He has been identified as Gifted and Talented in Art and Friday is the day that he gets to work with Ms. Shelly.  He was a relieved when school did not get canceled this past Friday.  This gave him a chance to complete his painting project that he had been working on under Ms. Shelly's guidance.  He did have to stay after school to put the finishing touches on it, but the masterpiece is complete.  Below is a picture of the artist and his painting.

Annee & Hayden had another pretty good weekend of basketball.  Annee's Blue Devils won 19-17 against the team that defeated them the first week of the season.  The Blue Devils are now 6-2 on the season and in line for the 2nd seed for the post-season tournament.  The Heat ran their record to 7-0 with a relatively easy win over the Magic.  Mr. Mike and Ms. Cathy, A&H's adopted grandparents from church made it to the games and joined us for a quick bite at Culver's afterward.  Hayden plays Friday and Annee plays Saturday this week.  There is also an academic match this Thursday.  Annee will miss it because she will be participating in All-State choir.
